How horses help humans

Over the last 3 years we have been running The Autism friendly horse experience we have many people attending our programme with many different challenges they face from Autism/ aspergers , communication, self awareness , self confidence issues, abuse, addiction, anger issues the list goes on .

So how can horses  help humans?

Horses mirror our emotions , they are non verbal, non judgemental peaceful animals ...

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” ― Winston S. Churchill

Here's the science bit.....

Through understanding the horses we learn to understand ourselves.

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional "healing" that happens when we are near horses. According to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher level of intelligence than the brain: A magnetometer can measure the heart's energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. While this is certainly significant it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse's heart is five times larger than the human one (imagine a sphere-shaped field that completely surrounds you). The horse's electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm!
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent" heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may "feel better" when we are around them. . . .studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy--that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. Often times, we only need to be in a horses presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy.”

Having a family member with Autism and first realising 6 years ago after seeing with my own eyes the differences in behaviour when John was around our horses, this prompted me to research further and realise that interaction with horses in the right environment of course ,could help people develop social skills , sensory development & verbal communication.

I'ts been scientifically proven that simply being around horses can alter our mindset, i have had first hand experience many times watching many of our learners whilst around my horses totally change their behaviour ,relax and be calm.

I am proud to say we have successfully been running our programme for 3 years  with local schools  who have attended sending most of their students, we also have many independent families attending one to one sessions on a weekly bases.

We receive ongoing feedback from teachers and parents amazed at the instant results from learners with a huge range of learning difficulties and challenges.

In May 2013 we started our personnel programme with our herd of 7 horses  "The Autism friendly horse experience" Horses & Autism therapy service to local schools and families.

We use the T.E.A.C.C.H programe, personalised  schedules and person centered planning to help develop each person’s individual needs during their visit, and each learner will take home a book of their own achievements at the end of their time here.

Our horses all live together ,as a herd and are barefoot, rugless, bitless when ridden and kept as natural as possible, which in turn allows them to be at their true best when interacting with humans.

Safety is our main focus and we do allow the sessions to be learner lead in a safe environment so each learner can benefit and learn by having their OWN experiences at their own pace, which has been proven to be also beneficial in transferring to other areas of their lives.

For more information on our  horses please please feel free to call me if you have anything you would like to discuss
